Chris Smith of International League AAA Pawtucket Red Sox Recalled by Boston Red Sox

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed righthanded pitcher Barolo Colon on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

To replace Colon on the active roster, the Red Sox have recalled righthanded pitcher Chris Smith from Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Colon sustained the injury in Monday night’s start at Philadelphia and left the game after pitching 4.0 innings in an 8-2 Boston loss. The righthander is 4-2 with a 4.09 earned run average in six starts since joining the Red Sox from Pawtucket on May 21.

Smith, 27, is 1-2 with a 1.52 ERA and 8 saves in 22 games/4 starts with Pawtucket this season. He opened the season with Double-A Portland but was promoted to the PawSox on April 7 without appearing in a game for the SeaDogs.

Since moving to the bullpen, Smith has compiled a 1.33 ERA (3 ER/20.1 IP) in his 18 relief appearances and has issued just one run in 8.0 innings in his last 9 games with the PawSox. Overall, he has held the opposition to a .195 batting average, .153 by lefthanded hitters.

Smith was purchased from Pawtucket by the Red Sox on May 18 and was on the active roster for two games before being optioned to the PawSox after the game on May 19. That was his only prior stint on a major league regular season roster. This is his 7th pro season after being selected by Boston in the 4th round of the 2002 1st Year Player Draft.
