Big Papi David Ortiz to Rehab with Pawtucket Red Sox and Other Boston Transactions

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – BOSTON, MA—The Red Sox today sent designated hitter David Ortiz on rehab assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League. Ortiz is expected to be in the lineup when the PawSox host Toledo on Thursday night at McCoy Stadium.

 

Ortiz was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 3, retroactive to June 1, with a partially torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, sustained on a swing on May 31 in Baltimore. He is expected to play for Pawtucket through Sunday before completing his rehab assignment with three games at Double-A Portland next Monday through Wednesday. The Red Sox begin a three-game series with the New York Yankees on Friday, July 25 at Fenway Park.

 

Ortiz is batting .252 with 13 homers and 43 RBI in 54 games with the Red Sox this season. This will be the first time he has played in a minor league game since July 20, 2001, his last of nine games on rehab assignment at Minnesota’s New Britain club.

RED SOX SIGN DERRIK GIBSON, SECOND ROUND PICK IN JUNE DRAFT

 

The Red Sox today announced the signing of shortstop Derrik Gibson, the club’s second round pick and third overall selection in the June 2008 1st Year Player Draft.

 

Gibson, 18, hit .633 with 5 doubles, 5 triples, 5 homers, 29 RBI, 34 runs and 13 steals as a senior at Seaford (DE) High School. The 6-foot-1, 170 pound righthanded hitter was named the 2008 Delaware High School Player of the Year as well as earning First-Team All-State honors at shortstop in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He was also named the 2007 Delaware Baseball Player of the Year after batting .491 with a home run, 19 RBI and 15 steals while going 7-1 with a 1.38 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 56.0 innings on the mound. He was recommended by Red Sox scout Chris Calciano.  

 

Gibson has been assigned to the Rookie League Gulf Coast Red Sox.

MINOR MOVES: Several minor league transactions have been made with the start of the second half at Pawtucket and Portland. OF Jeff Corsaletti and 1B Sandy Madera have been promoted from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Pawtucket and will be active tonight. INFS Lars Anderson and Argenis Diaz have been promoted from Single-A Lancaster to Portland with OF Bryan Pritz going from Pawtucket to Portland. RHP Kyle Snyder, who has been on the Pawtucket disabled list since early June with a right groin injury, will make a rehab start for Single-A Lowell tonight versus Mahoning Valley.

 

ALL-STAR PERFORMANCES: In Wednesday’s Triple-A All-Star Game at Louisville, 2B Joe Thurston went 3-for-4, DH Chris Carter was 1-for-5 with a 9th inning homer, LF Jeff Bailey was 0-for-1, and LF Jonathan Van Every was 0-for-3 in the International League’s 6-5 loss to the Pacific Coast League…In the Eastern League All-Star Game at Manchester, NH, LF Jeff Corsaletti was 1-for-2 and RF Zach Daeges went 0-for-2 while Beau Vaughan pitched a scoreless inning in the North’s 5-3 win.
