Sioux City Explorers Sign Enohel Polanco to American Association Contract
Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 12:02PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Friday, July 18 WICHTIA, KS -- The Sioux City Explorers announced today that they have signed Veteran SS Enohel Polanco to an American Association contract. Polanco has arrived in Wichita and will be in the starting line-up for tonight's game with the Wingnuts. The signing brings the Explorers roster to a full compliment of 22 players.
The 33 year old infielder is from Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and is a career .270 hitter with 51 HR and 421 RBI. Polanco has played in 5 different major league organizations -- the New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Florida Marlins, Cleveland Indians, and Colorado Rockies. Polanco was signed by the Mets as a nondrafted free agent on November 25, 1991. In 2006, Polanco hit .325 for Shreveport in the American Association with 5 HR and 53 RBI and was third in the league in triples with 7.
Polanco started the season with the Shreveport Sports and hit .218 with 0 HR and 6 RBI in 24 games before hurting his hand on a bad hop ground ball. The injury prevented him from swinging a bat and he went home to heal when the Sports decided to give him his release.
Polanco has played for former Major League managers John Gibbons, Doc Edwards and current Baltimore Orioles skipper Dave Trembly and current Cleveland Indians manger Eric Wedge. He played for former Explorers manager Benny Castillo in Duluth-Supeior for 36 games in 2000.
"Polanco brings another veteran presence on this club and really strengthens our defense up the middle," says Sioux City Manager Les Lancaster. "He has a strong bat that should eventually move into the two spot in the order. Polanco will move Nick McCoola back to 2nd base and we'll DH Alex Llanos. He does need to see some live pitching after missing some time because of his injury but I'm confident this will help our club."
