James Scott | Comments Off | Arkansas Travelers Add Outfielder Coby Smith, RHP Marco Albano
Sunday, July 20, 2008 at 07:38AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - North Little Rock, Arkansas - The Travs outfield will receive a boost Saturday as the Los Angeles Angels announced that Coby Smith is rejoining the team from triple-A Salt Lake. The Travs are also getting RHP Marco Albano from Rancho Cucamonga to pitch out of the bullpen. Unfortunately the Travs will be without catcher Anel De Los Santos after he was placed on the disabled list due to the effects of a mild concussion he suffered during a collision at home plate Thursday at Northwest Arkansas. Alex Silversmith, a newly signed free agent, will join the Travs today from Cedar Rapids to replace De Los Santos.
De Los Santos was injured while blocking the plate in the sixth inning Thursday at Northwest Arkansas. Naturals 1B Kila Kaaihue barreled through De Los Santos, who did not have time to brace himself or secure the ball. After being knocked onto his back, De Los Santos remained on the ground for a while and took several minutes before being allowed to continue. He eventually left the game in the eighth inning.
The Travs disabled list currently stands at six players.
A starter for the Travs on opening day, Smith left the club for a triple-A promotion in early May. However Smith batted only .195 in 42 games for Salt Lake. He was one of the top hitters in the Texas League in April compiling a .304 batting average in 30 games along with 1 home run, 6 RBI and 18 runs scored.
Albano, a converted utility player, comes to the Travs after appearing in 29 games as a reliever with Rancho Cucamonga. He posted a record of 2-3 with a 7.11 ERA in 44.1 innings pitched. Signed by the Angels as a 33rd round draft choice in 2005 out of Boston College, Albano converted to the mound full time for the 2008 season.
Silversmith was signed as a free agent out of Florida Atlantic University this June. He began his pro career at rookie-level Tempe for three games before going to Cedar Rapids to replace De Los Santos. In a total of 6 games since being signed, Silversmith is 1-for-10.
