GENEVA, IL – The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that catcher Petey Paramore and pitcher Carlos Hernandez have joined the Cougars. Both players are expected to arrive in northeastern Indiana in time for tonight’s 6 p.m. CDT contest against the Fort Wayne Wizards. Along with the addition of both players, the Cougars have placed catcher Juan Nunez on the disabled list with a right thumb injury. Today’s transactions bring the Cougars’ active roster to 25 players as the squad opens a nine-game road trip beginning tonight.
Paramore (3rd Rd, 90th overall, 2008) becomes the fourth ’08 draftee to arrive in Kane County as the Cougars now hold Oakland’s top four picks on their roster. In nine games for the A’s rookie-league affiliate in Arizona this summer, Paramore batted .364 with eight hits in 22 at-bats.

A three-year player at Arizona State University, Paramore batted .355 with 7 home runs and 52 RBIs for the Sun Devils, the same program which produced former Cougars Travis Buck (2005) and Andre Ethier (2003). Paramore was one of a school-record 15 players drafted as the squad produced a 49-13 record while claiming a Pac-10 championship.
Paramore reunites with a former teammate and fellow ’08 draftee in pitcher Tyson Ross, who currently is traveling with the squad while on the disabled list. Both Paramore and Ross were part of the USA National Team in 2007.
The Cougars also receive an upgrade to their pitching staff with the addition of Carlos Hernandez. Hernandez (35th Rd, 2006) joins the squad after posting a 1.82 ERA in seven outings, all starts for the Short-A Vancouver Canadians this season. In 39.2 innings pitched, Hernandez struck out 38 batters and did not yield a home run. Hernandez’s most recent start (7/21 vs. Yakima) was his longest outing of the season as the lefty lasted seven innings, allowing just three hits and no earned runs.
Nunez (FA, 2006),whom the Cougars received on June 27 from Vancouver, moves to the disabled list after playing in seven games – all at catcher – while batting .333.
The Cougars open a three-game set at Fort Wayne tonight at 6 p.m. CDT as Kane County pitcher Lance Sewell (2-3, 3.38) faces the Wizards’ Wynn Pelzer (8-4, 3.14).
