Jemile Weeks Placed on DL With Hip Flexor Injury

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com -

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - GENEVA , IL – The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that infielder Jemile Weeks has been placed on the disabled list, due to a hip flexor injury. Weeks left Chicago yesterday morning and will begin a rehabilitation program shortly. Also, outfielder DJ Hollingsworth has been placed on the voluntary retirement list. No countermoves have been announced at this time; therefore, the Cougars’ active roster has been trimmed to 23 players entering play tonight.

A first-round selection and the 12th overall pick last June, Weeks arrived in Kane County on July 9 and made his professional debut that evening against the Peoria Chiefs at Elfstrom Stadium. Against that very team just twenty days later, Weeks injured his hip flexor in the game’s first at-bat as the Cougars battled the Peoria Chiefs at Wrigley Field. In 19 games for the Cougars, Weeks batted .297 with 1 home run and 8 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. The 21-year old put together seven multi-hit games this summer.

Hollingsworth, a free agent signing by the Athletics last month, joined the Cougars on July 1 and made his Kane County debut the next day against Burlington. In 28 games, Hollingsworth batted .224 with 6 RBIs.

The Cougars (27-29), winners of five straight games, look to continue their recent hot streak at home as the series against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers continues. Kane County aims for its sixth straight win for the first time since beginning the season with a 10-0 mark. Oakland’s 2nd round pick Tyson Ross (0-0, 3.52) squares off against the Timber Rattlers’ Juan Ramirez (5-9, 4.36). Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
