Newark Bears Announce Trade with Lancaster Barnstormers

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -

NEWARK, NJ – The 2007 Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears have announced a trade with the Lancaster Barnstormers for catcher Manny Mejia.  In exchange, the Barnstormers will receive pitchers Matt Sweeney and Steve Kent.

Mejia appeared in 73 games with the Barnstormers this season and held a .256 batting average with 8 home runs and 45 RBI.  Signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006, the Atlantic League veteran has spent the previous two seasons with the Road Warriors.  In 475 career minor league games, Mejia is batting .279 with 214 RBI.

This was Sweeney’s second season with the Bears, having helped the team win the Atlantic League championship last year.  This season he was 1-5 with a 6.22 ERA.  Kent started the season with the Long Island Ducks and joined the Bears in mid-June.  He collected five saves during his tenure with the Bears.

“While it is difficult to part ways with Matt and Steve, we are excited to bring Manny to Newark,” said Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations Jim Cerny.  “This is a classic example of a trade that is going to help both teams down the stretch.”
