Arizona Diamondbacks Add Four Minor League Players to 40-Man Roster

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-PHOENIX, AZ – The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today that four players were added to the club’s 40-man roster.  The team selected the contracts of infielder Cole Gillespie, right-handed pitchers Roque Mercedes and Daniel Stange and left-handed pitcher Jordan Norberto.

 

Gillespie, 25, was acquired along with Roque Mercedes on July 19 from the Brewers in exchange for Felipe Lopez. He hit a combined .273 (114-for-417) this season, with 13 home runs and 63 RBI with Single-A Brevard County (Brewers) and Triple-A Nashville (Brewers) and Reno. Gillespie hit .304 (42-for-138) with 5 home runs, 27 RBI and a .932 OPS for Reno. He also played in 20 games in the Arizona Fall League this season, hitting .333 (23-for-72) with a home run and 7 RBI. Over parts of 4 seasons in the minors, he has hit .283 (425-for-1,503) with 47 home runs and 235 RBI in 440 games.  

 

Mercedes, 23, went a combined 2-1 with 7 saves and a 1.78 ERA (12 ER in 60.2 IP) over 44 relief appearances with Single-A Brevard County (Brewers) and Double-A Mobile this season. Over parts of 5 minor league seasons, he has gone 21-22 with 10 saves and a 4.44 ERA (198 ER in 401.1 IP) in 130 games (53 starts).

 

Stange, 23, went 0-4 with 10 saves and a 4.88 ERA (28 ER in 51.2 IP) over 39 relief outings at Double-A Mobile this season. Over parts of 4 seasons in the D-backs’ farm system, he went 12-13 with 41 saves and a 3.93 ERA (73 ER in 167.1 IP) in 131 relief appearances.

Norberto, 22, went a combined 4-3 with 4 saves and a 3.82 ERA (29 ER in 68.1 IP) over 48 relief appearances at Single-A Visalia and Double-A Mobile this season. Over parts of 6 seasons in the D-backs’ farm system, he went 26-23 with 4 saves and a 4.20 ERA (196 ER in 420.1 IP) in 134 games (70 starts).

 

Additionally, the D-backs reinstated infielder Conor Jackson and right-handed pitchers Chad Qualls and Brandon Webb from the 60-day disabled list.

 

The D-backs 40 man roster is as follows — 21 pitchers, 4 catchers, 9 infielders and 6 outfielders.  The roster currently includes pitchers Bryan Augenstein, Blaine Boyer, Billy Buckner, Juan Gutierrez, Dan Haren, Aaron Heilman, Jose Marte, Roque Mercedes, Kevin Mulvey, Kyler Newby, Jordan Norberto (L), Chad Qualls, Leo Rosales, Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth (L), Leyson Septimo (L), Daniel Stange, Cesar Valdez, Esmerling Vasquez, Brandon Webb and Clay Zavada (L); catchers Luke Carlin, John Hester, Miguel Montero and Chris Snyder; infielders Tony Abreu, Brandon Allen, Pedro Ciriaco, Stephen Drew, Augie Ojeda, Mark Reynolds, Ryan Roberts, Rusty Ryal and Josh Whitesell; outfielders Eric Byrnes, Cole Gillespie, Conor Jackson, Gerardo Parra, Justin Upton and Chris Young.
