BOSTON , MA --The Boston Red Sox today signed lefthanded pitcher Nick Hagadone, the team’s top selection in the 2007 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Director of Amateur Scouting Jason McLeod made the announcement.
Hagadone, who has completed his junior year at the University of Washington, was selected by the Red Sox
with the 55th overall pick, that coming in the supplemental first round. He has been assigned to Single-A Lowell in the New York-Penn League.
In addition, the Red Sox have signed eight amateur free agents from Australia, Chinese Taipei, Dominican Republic, and Venezuela, it was announced by Red Sox Vice President/International Scouting Craig Shipley.
Hagadone was named First-Team All-Pac-10 in 2007 after going 6-1 with 11 saves and a 2.77 ERA (21 ER/68.1 IP) in 25 games (two starts) for the Huskies. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound lefthander had 72 strikeouts in 68.1 innings and limited opposing hitters to a .235 batting average. The Sumner, Washington resident began the season as a starter but spent most of the year as Washington’s closer.
With his signing, 19 players selected by Boston in the 2007 First Year Player Draft are under contract.
Of the eight international free agents, seven signed contracts for 2008. 18-year-old outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin from Chinese Taipei signed a 2007 contract and has reported to the Rookie League Gulf Coast Red Sox.
