Cincinnati Cyclones Sign Jon Landry and Receive Jeremy Smith from Milwaukee Admirals

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones, ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators, announced this afternoon they have signed defenseman Jon Landry and received goaltender Jeremy Smith from the Milwaukee Admirals.

Landry, 25, is in his third professional season and comes to Cincinnati after having been released by Rochester (American Hockey League).  He appeared in one game with the Americans.  Last season, Jon played in 41 games with Johnstown (ECHL) netting seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points and 49 penalty minutes.  He also spent 21 games with Syracuse (AHL) and had a goal and three assists for four points and 18 penalty minutes.

The six-foot-two, 190 pound native of Lexington, MA, spent his rookie season with Elmira (ECHL).  Landryplayed 18 games for the Jackals and netted two goals and eight assists for ten points.  His season was cut short when he was among the players injured in a bus crash in November 2007 returning home from a game in Cincinnati. 

Landry earned four varsity letters playing hockey at Holy Cross, collecting 24 goals and 62 assists for 86 points in 133 career games for the Crusaders.  A two-time selection to the Atlantic Hockey All-Stars squad, Jon was named the league’s Best Defenseman in 2007.  His junior year (2005-06) was highlighted by a 4-3 overtime win over Minnesota in the NCAA West Regional semifinals.  His two assists in that game helped him to being selected to the West All-Regional team.

Smith, 20, started last season with Plymouth (OHL) and turned in a 3-9-2 mark with a 4.94 goals against average.  He was traded to Niagara (OHL) and posted a 12-9-3 mark with a 3.18 goals against average and a .913 save percentage with the IceDogs.  In the postseason, Jeremy was instrumental in Niagara’s upset of third-seeded Ottawa in the opening round.  His 32 save performance in game seven’s overtime propelled the IceDogs into the OHL’s semifinals.  He had a 5-5-2 mark in the postseason with a 3.73 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.

The six-foot, 170 pound native of Brownstown, MI, was a second round draft choice (#54 overall) of the Nashville Predators.  He played three seasons of junior hockey at the OHL level and won 23 games in each of his first two seasons with Plymouth.  Smith was selected to play in the OHL All-Star Game in 2008.  Jeremy turned in a 61-39-10 record in the OHL with a 3.17 goals against and a .911 save percentage.

“Jon Landry is a talented offensive defenseman,” Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said.  “He is another piece that can fit into our lineup and help us.”

“Both Jeremy Smith and Robert Mayer (the Cyclones goaltender assigned by the Hamilton Bulldogs) are exciting young goaltenders,”  Weber continued.  “They each have tremendous upside in goal.”

The Cyclones currently have 27 players in camp and will prepare for their season opening game on Friday night (Oct. 16) at Elmira.  The game will be carried on 1530-AM The Sports Animal with a 7pm air time.

Tickets for the 2009-10 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale.  The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3.  The Cyclones open the season at Elmira on Friday, October 16 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Wheeling on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm.  There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.
