Brad Marchand Assigned to Providence Bruins

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Providence, RI The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins have assigned forward Brad Marchand to the P-Bruins and placed forward Trent Whitfield on waivers for the purpose of assignment to Providence. Should Whitfield clear waivers, the P-Bruins will have 25 players on their roster, including 16 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.

Marchand, 21, was recalled by Boston on October 18 and appeared in 12 games, tallying one assist, in his first NHL experience. His lone NHL point came in his NHL debut, a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators on October 21. The right wing returns to Providence, where he recorded at least one point in all six of Providence’s games to that point. The second-year pro totaled six goals and two assists for eight points, good for a third-place tie on the P-Bruins at the time of his call-up.

Marchand was named Providence’s Rookie of the Year in 2008-09 after appearing in 79 regular season games and compiling 59 points (18g, 41a). The native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, added 15 points (7g, 8a) in 16 postseason contests as a rookie. Boston selected Marchand 71st overall in the third round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Whitfield, 32, earned his first call-up to Boston on October 21, making his Bruins debut that night against Nashville. The veteran went scoreless in seven games for the parent club. He returns to Providence, where he ranked tied for third on the P-Bruins in scoring with three goals and five assists for eight points through six games at the time of his recall.

Whitfield, a 12th year pro and the Providence captain, was signed by Boston as a free agent on July 13, 2009. The native of Alamdea, Saskatchewan, was originally selected by the Bruins 100th overall in round four of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
