MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – MUSKEGON, MI.--- As the all-new International Hockey League gets set to make its formal premiere with the inauguration of the 2007-08 season, the Muskegon Fury continue to make more positive inroads in their roster development with their most recent player signing acquisition today.
On this date, the Fury Team Owner and Club President Tony Lisman, in concert with Director of Hockey Operations / Head Coach Bruce Ramsay, have announced that standout veteran defenseman KYLE KOS has assented to terms and affixed his signature to the bottom line of a new two-year contract under the employ of Muskegon. Adhering to club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
KOS, 28, is signed, sealed and delivered for his ninth pro season overall and his first-ever with the Fury. The strong, staunch 6-3, 210lb defender will make his Muskegon debut bringing a background rich and replete with credentials of the highest order and standing as he will join a Fury backline corps which already includes all-stars Dave Van Drunen and Philippe Plante along with promising newcomers Jay Hardwick and Russ Moyer.
The newest Fury defenseman is coming off one of his best seasons ever as a pro last campaign when he plied his craft with the Rocky Mountain Rage of the Central Hockey League (CHL). In the 2006-07 season, he collected 21-points in 53-games on 4-goals, 17-assists with 91-PIM and a team-best +10 rating. His offensive numbers included 1-PPG, 10-PPA, 1-GWG, 1-FG punctuated with a team-high 2-SHG.
The name Kos could be quite familiar to the fan-dom of the Fury; especially in the two seasons prior to his campaign in the CHL. In the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, he saw service with then-division rivals, the Motor City Mechanics of the UHL when former Fury Colonial Cup II 2001-02 head coach Danton Cole was at the helm of the suburban Detroit squadron.
It was there where he made a lasting impression on Fury bench pilot Ramsay. “Having watched him for those two seasons with Motor City, we know that Kyle will be a major asset to the success of the Fury for this coming season. He is a big, solid defenseman who will bring plenty of attributes to our club. He is physical, moves the puck exceptionally well and has lots of great experience. With Kyle, Dave Van Drunen and Philippe Plante, we have a trio of stellar veteran defensemen who will not only shore up our back end but will also be vital to the development and maturing of our younger players.”
In his two seasons under the auspices of the since-defunct Motor City club, Kos played in 126-games, registering 50-points on 7-goals, 43-assists with 207-PIM. In 2004-05, he was 53(6-26-32) 77-PIM; in 2005-06, 73(1-17-18) 130-PIM.
Originally selected as the Tampa Bay Lightning’s second round choice, 33rd overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, the Hope, B.C. native launched his pro career in a previous IHL incarnation back in 1999-00 with the Detroit Vipers where he played for two seasons. For three more years, he made the ECHL his playing home base league, performing on the blue line for Arkansas, Dayton, Florida and Toledo.
Kos also had his ticket punched for destination to the AHL where he saw action with Springfield in 2001-02 and Cincinnati in 2002-03.
When drafted by Tampa Bay, he was in the process of completing competition at the prestigious major junior ‘A’ level in the WHL (Western Hockey League) for the Red Deer Rebels and Kamloops Blazers.
Kos pro career numbers are accordingly: 449-games, 25-goals, 94-assists, 119-points and 871-PIM.
Today’s signing of KYLE KOS brings to 10 the total number of players currently under contract to the Fury for the upcoming 2007-08 IHL season. Previously, Muskegon unveiled the player signings of defensemen DAVE VAN DRUNEN, JAY HARDWICK, RUSS MOYER, PHILIPPE PLANTE; centers BILLY COLLINS, MIKE WATT; right wings ROBIN BOUCHARD, ADAM SERGERIE, BILL ZALBA.
