Neil Clark Of The Port Huron Icehawks Gets To Skate With The Big Boys After Joining Detroit Red Wings Training Camp
Saturday, September 22, 2007 at 02:15PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – PORT HURON, Mich. – Icehawks forward Neil Clark showcased his skills at the game’s highest level this week when he joined the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, September 20 in an exhibition game with the Minnesota Wild.
The former member of the CHL Laredo Bucks played nine shifts for a total of just over six minutes Thursday as the Red Wings lost 3-2. He was not scheduled to play in Friday’s game.
“It’s a real honor to put on that jersey and skate with some of the legends like Nicklas Lidstrom and Kris Draper,” Clark said. “No matter what happens, it has been an unbelievable experience.”
Clark, 26, joined Red Wings training camp September 13 at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City. He made an instant impression, winning a fight on day three against Wings prospect and AHL vet Adam Keefe. His performance won him a spot on the ice during the Red/White game on Monday, September 17. He played 10 minutes during that game and won another fight, this one with AHL player Aaron Downey.
Icehawks center Kris Vernarsky also attended Red Wings training camp. He was released by Detroit on Wednesday, September 19 and will join the Icehawks for camp beginning October 8.
“We are extremely proud of both guys,” Stan Drulia, head coach and general manager of the Icehawks said. “Our relationship as an “AA” affiliate of the Red Wings is a wonderful fit for both organizations and has opened up an amazing opportunity for these guys. We will continue to work closely with Detroit throughout the season.”
Clark played at Manhantanville College from 2003-06, leading the team to back-to-back conference titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Last season he was a member of the Laredo Bucks and played in the championship series with the Colorado Eagles. A tough physical player, he tallied 17 points and 140 penalty minutes in 43 regular season games. In 21 playoff games, he amassed six goals, six assists and 76 penalty minutes.
