Former Odessa Roughnecks WR Anthony Armstrong Stays on with Washington Redskins Practice Squad

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-ODESSA, TX. : The Odessa Roughnecks announced on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 that former wide receiver, Anthony Armstrong, has been signed to the Washington Redskins practice squad.  Armstrong was signed to the Redskins’ practice squad on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 after being released by the Miami Dolphins during the 2009 preseason.  Armstrong (5’11”, 183 lbs.) was first acquired as a free agent by the Miami Dolphins back on July 26th, 2008 where he spent the entire regular season on the Dolphins’ practice squad.  During the 2008 preseason, Armstrong finished third on the Dolphins roster with four receptions for 43 yards and registered 34 kickoff return yards.  Armstrong returned to the Dolphins for the 2009 preseason where he saw action in several preseason games at the flanker position and on kickoff returns.  

Before his time in the NFL Armstrong spent two seasons with the Dallas Desperados (AFL).  Armstrong was signed to the Desperados active roster on March 25, 2007 and he made his AFL debut on March 31 versus Austin.  In his first game with the Desperados Armstrong recovered an onside kick and returned it 40 yards for a game-winning score.  He would finish with 10 receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns in four games played in ‘07.  In 2008, Armstrong had a big year with Dallas by finishing third on the team with 85 receptions for 1,148 yards and 18 touchdowns.  He additionally returned seven kickoffs for 31 yards helping the Desperados compile a 12-4 regular season record and a birth to the AFL playoffs.

In the 2006 championship year with the Roughnecks, Armstrong played in 13 games and finished third on the team with 55 receptions for 760 yards and 18 touchdowns.  He was the teams’ second leading rusher by carrying the ball four times for 39 yards and recording three touchdowns.  Armstrong additionally returned seven kickoffs for 166 yards and one touchdown.  Defensively, he collected eight tackles, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.  Armstrong had his best performance versus the Louisiana Swashbucklers on July 1, 2006 where he registered 11 receptions for 157 yards and three touchdowns.

As a senior at West Texas A&M, he was named to the All-Lone Star Conference Second Team Offense after leading all West Texas A&M receivers with 54 receptions for 607 yards and four touchdowns.  He would start all 11 games as a junior and was named the LSC South Receiver of the Year and earned First Team All-LSC South honors after registering 54 receptions for 740 yards and four touchdowns.
