Solid outings at the plate by DH John Allen and LF Ed Montague help the Fort Worth Cats to victory over the Shreveport Sports. Allen on the day went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. The home run was his eighth of the season. Montague, on the other hand, had three hits in four official at-bats along with a run scored. Cats’ starter Joel Kirsten notched the win by pitching 7 2/3 innings allowing only one earned run on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts. He is now 5-1 on the year. RF Chad Gambill and SS Wade Robinson each went 2-for-4 at the dish for the Sports in the losing effort.

Grand Prairie 5, Pensacola 4

In a back-and-forth battle, the Grand Prairie AirHogs held on late to secure a win on the road. Trailing 3-2 entering the eighth inning, the AirHogs scored two to take a 4-3 lead. They added an insurance run in the top of the ninth and it was a good thing they did. Pensacola managed to close the gap to one with a score in the ninth, but they couldn’t complete the comeback and fell 5-4. Grand Prairie starting pitcher Scot Drucker picked up his third win. He allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits in seven innings.

Sioux City 4, St. Paul 3

The Sioux City Explorers came from behind to win in rather dramatic fashion at home, keeping the Saints 1.5 games behind first place Sioux Falls. St. Paul broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the eighth inning, but the Explorers answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame and held on in the ninth for their 17th win of the year. Sioux City reliever Brett Reid was credited with the win. He struck out three in 1 2/3 perfect innings to improve to 2-0 on the year.

Lincoln 3, El Paso 1

Three solo home runs propelled the Lincoln Saltdogs to victory behind a complete game effort from starting pitcher Jarrett Gardner. Lincoln DH Mario Delgado, CF Jonny Kaplan and 3B Shea McFeely were each 1-for-4 with a homer. Gardner allowed one run on seven hits and struck out nine to improve to 2-2 on the year. El Paso C Mat Kent was 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Diablos in the losing effort.

Wichita 5, Sioux Falls 1

Wichita starting pitcher Gustavo Mata was outstanding, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out four in eight innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the year. The win was an important one for the Wingnuts as it pulls Wichita to within 2.5 games of Sioux Falls, the North Division leader. Wingnuts 1B Stephen Pearson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. LF Blake Gailen also had a good game. He was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
