MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Sioux City, IA – The Sioux Falls Canaries (16-12) went up 6-0 and held off a comeback attempt by the Sioux City Explorers (11-19) in a 7-5 win on Sunday evening at Lewis & Clark Park. Kris Regas pitched a perfect ninth inning for his league leading 10th save of the year.
ADVERTISEMENT The Canaries scored three out of the gate in the top of the first inning. Kennard Bibbs walked and took second on a wild pitch. After Beau Torbert was hit by a pitch, a second wild pitch allowed Torbert to second and Bibbs to third. Will Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right field to advance Torbert to third, score Bibbs, and give the Canaries a 1-0 lead. Grant Richardson followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Torbert for a two-run advantage. Richardson was able to reach second base on the play when Explorers left-fielder Anton French dropped the fly ball. Richardson later scored in the inning on a single by Ben Van Iderstine, and the Canaries led 3-0 at the first break of the game.
The Birds got another run in the third inning. Beau Torbert hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Canaries a 4-0 lead.
The Canaries added another run in the fourth inning. Van Iderstine singled and stole his second base of the game to get in scoring position. Tim Hutting delivered a two-out double. Hutting’s Canaries-leading ninth double of the season scored Van Iderstine to give the Canaries a 5-0 advantage.
The Birds put another single run on the board in the fifth. With two outs, Josh Patton doubled and scored on a single by Van Iderstine. At the midpoint of the game, the Canaries led, 6-0.
Sioux City chopped into the Canaries lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jason Tuttle singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Anton French singled to score Tuttle and get the Explorers on the board, 6-1. After Chris Grossman walked, Juan Camacho doubled to score French and advance Grossman to third. Alex Llanos grounded out to plate Grossman, and Luke Hetherington singled to score Camacho. After six innings, the Canaries lead was trimmed to two, 6-4.
The Explorers got one more in the eighth inning. Alex Llanos singled and advanced to third on a one-out single by Tug Gillingham. Llanos scored when Derek Schermerhorn reached on a fielder’s choice. Llanos run cut the Canaries lead to one, 6-5.
The final run of the game belonged to the Canaries who scored an insurance run in the ninth inning. The Canaries loaded bases on a single by Smith and walks to Grant Richardson and Patton. Van Iderstine hit a bases-loaded, two-out groundball to the shortstop. Nick McCoola bobbled the grounder, allowing Smith to score from third and give the Canaries a 7-5 victory.
Travis Kane (3-1) pitched 5.2 innings allowing four runs on eight hits to defeat the Explorers for the second time this season. Tim Layden (1-3) suffered the loss for Sioux City .
