Brockton Rox Finally Defeat the Ottawa Rapidz After Rain Delay and 12 Innings

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Brockton, MA (June 30, 2008) – After a rain delay of an hour and thirty minutes and twelve innings of baseball, the Brockton Rox finished up a series victory over the Ottawa Rapidz with a 4-3 win.  Brockton scored the winning run in the top of the 12th inning, when 2B Melvin Falu scored on a wild pitch.

Brockton never trailed in the game and took an early lead.  In the top of the first inning, Falu drove a double to right field with RF Eugene Julien on first base.  Julien came all the way around to score on the play.  The Rox extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning when 1B Jason Colson hit his first home run of the season; a two-run shot just inside the right field foul pole.  Ottawa starter LHP Fraser Robinson then shut down the Brockton offense for the next five innings.

After Colson home run in the fifth, Robinson retired the next 14 batters in order and gave the Rapidz offense an opportunity claw back into the game.  Ottawa scored twice in the seventh inning and once in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3.  The game became a battle of the bullpens in the late innings.

Rox pitchers RHP James Baker, LHP Jacob Ramos, and RHP Jerry Dunn combined for 5.1 innings of work to finish the game.  Baker allowed a sacrifice fly to Rapidz 3B Felix Escalona which tied the game in the eighth inning.  However it was the only run that the trio allowed despite a dangerous threat by Ottawa in the 11th inning.  The Rapidz got a leadoff double from LF Jereme Milons to start the inning.  He moved up to third base on a fielder’s choice and was 90 feet from home, representing the game winning run.  But Ramos forced RF Pete Pirman to ground out to end the inning.

Brockton plated the winning run in the 12th inning after Ottawa’s LHP Jose Guanchez threw two wild pitches; the second of which allowed Falu to score with two outs.  Dunn recorded his tenth save with his work in the bottom of the 12th inning.

The win for the Rox kept Ottawa from winning its first series in franchise history and from winning back-to-back games for the first time as well.  Brockton travels to Quebec City, Quebec on Tuesday for a 7:05 PM matchup with the Quebec Capitales.
