Wichita Wingnuts Defeat Pensacola Pelicans 12-6 - American Association

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Pensacola - The Pensacola Pelicans (0-1) attempted comeback, scoring six runs in the middle innings, fell short as the Wichita Wingnuts (1-0) won 12-6.

The Wingnuts would jump out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning.  Kevin Hooper led off the game with a lead off double over the head of Matt Pali in left field.  A sacrifice bunt by Blake Gailen moved the runner over to third before Michael Thompson would drive in Hooper on a sac-fly to center for the first run of the game.

Pelican’s starter Dane DeValk found himself in a jam in the top of the second.  He would hit consecutive batters to put runners on first and second.  A base hit to center field by Chris Colton would score both runners to give the Wingnuts a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Wingnuts would put up three more runs on two hits.  Hooper, who led off the inning with a walk, would come around to score from second on a bloop base hit from Thompson.  Next batter, Dustin Mohr hit a two-run homerun to left to make it 6-0 Wingnuts.

The Wingnuts tacked on three runs on five hits in the top half of the sixth.  A leadoff triple by Brenan Herrera got things going for the Wingnuts.  Colton would drive in Herrera on a single up the middle for his third RBI of the game.  Consecutive singles by pinch hitter, Leivi Ventura and Thompson would load the bases for the Wingnuts.  Mohr would come up and knock a two-run double down the left field line to put the Wingnuts up 9-0.

The Pelicans would chip away at the Wingnuts lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning.  Dylan Parzyk led off the inning with a line drive single into left center.  Dallas Christison followed up with a walk to put runners on first and second.  Francisco Leandro came up and belted his second homerun of the season for a three-run shot over the right field fence.

Pels would continue to swing the bats well as they would put up another three-run inning in the seventh.  Consecutive singles by Cesar Aranguren and Evan Conley would get the Pelicans offense started.  Dylan Parzyk would then walk to load the bases.  Christison would get hit by the pitch which would force in Aranguren.  With bases still loaded, Leandro would rip a single up the middle to score Conley.  Matt Pali would follow up with a walk to force in Parzyk for the final run of the inning.

The Wingnuts added three runs in the final two innings to make it 12-6 ballgame.

Clegg Snipes will take the mound tomorrow night in game two of the series.
