The South All-Stars brought their hitting shoes north to St. Paul, MN and defeated the North All-Stars 11-4 in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 6,330. Fort Worth OF Brian Fryer was the game’s Most Valuable Player as he went 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, and four RBI. His bases loaded double in the top of the third inning opened the scoring in the game and his solo homer to left field in the eighth inning completed the South’s scoring in the contest.
The South led the whole way and had a 10-0 lead after five innings of play. The defending champion Fort Worth Cats played a big role in the game as starting pitchers Joel Kirsten, Pedro Flores, and Dan Grybash combined for five innings of work with only one earned run allowed. Kirsten was the winner, Pat Mahomes of Sioux Falls, the loser. Mahomes was the second pitcher of the evening for the North after St. Paul’s Charlie Ruud started and went two innings without allowing a hit. Mahomes surrendered four earned runs on four hits. Trailing 11-1, the North All-Stars made some noise in the bottom of the ninth inning against one of the league’s top closers as they collected four hits and scored three unearned runs off Fort Worth’s Jon Hunton.
Other notable performers in the game included El Paso’s Walter Olmstead, Pensacola’s Brandon Sing, and Sioux Falls’ Beau Torbert. Olmstead went 1-for-3 with a home run, scored three times, and drove in two runs. Sing left the yard in the fourth inning and scored twice. Torbert, the league leader in home runs, ended the shutout with a seventh inning homer and finished 2-for-4. Grand Prairie’s David Espinosa had a key double in the third which added two more runs and gave the South an early 4-0 cushion. Shreveport’s Ron Fenwick was a solid contributor going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Wichita’s infield tandem of Kevin Hooper and Brenan Herrera played well for the North as they each finished with two hits.
