Keith Reed Delivers Winning Run in Newark Bears 5-4 Win Over Southern Maryland Crabs

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - NEWARK, NJ – A ninth-inning RBI single by Keith Reed lifted the Newark Bears to a 5-4 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to complete a three-game sweep on Wednesday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

With two outs and the Bears winning 4-3 in the top of the ninth, Chris Maples smacked a solo home run to tie the game.  Mike Just then led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and advanced to second on single by Ramon Castro.  Reed then batted in Just with a game-winning RBI single.

An RBI double by Maples gave the Blue Crabs an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.  But the Bears tied the game in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Ramon Castro to plate Vic Gutierrez.  They then took a 3-1 lead in the next inning.  First Jose Herrera scored on a sacrifice fly by Gerard Haran.  Tim Sweeney followed with an RBI single to plate Raul Gonzalez.

The Blue Crabs and Bears exchanged solo home runs during the sixth to make the score 4-2 by the end of the inning.  James Shanks led off the top of the inning with a homer over the left field wall, and Haran responded in the bottom of the inning with a similarly located blast.

The following inning, the Blue Crabs cut the score to 4-3 with a sacrifice fly by Brandon Ketron.

Bears reliever Edwin Almonte (4-2) picked up the win while Derrick DePriest (4-6) suffered the loss.

The Bears next head to Lancaster for a four-game series against the Barnstormers.  Mike Bumstead (10-5) will take the mound for the Bears in tomorrow’s 7:05 game.
