Quebec Capitales Rally For 6-3 Win Over Brockton Rox

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Brockton, MA (July 2, 2008) – The Brockton Rox dropped a second straight game on Wednesday night in Quebec City, falling 6-3 to the Quebec Capitales. Despite emerging from an early 2-0 deficit, the Rox were upended by a Capitales’ rally in the seventh inning.

Both teams committed costly errors in the game. In the first inning, the Capitales jumped on top first with a sacrifice fly from RF Alex Nunez which scored LF Issael Gonzalez. Gonzalez had reached on a leadoff single and advanced all the way to third base when Rox LF Jud Thipgen misplayed the ball in left. The Capitales pushed the lead to 2-0 on DH Patrick Scalabrini’s solo home run in the second inning.

With ace RHP John Kelly on the mound for Brockton, the Rox offense stepped up to erase the early deficit. Brockton scored in the fourth inning on DH Jason Colson’s RBI single, and tied the game in the fifth inning when Thipgen walked with the bases loaded.

The Capitales’ defense allowed Brockton to take the lead in the seventh inning. CF Ervin Alcantara led off with ground ball to second base which was muffed by 2B Jean Michel Rochon-Salvas. Alcantara then advanced to third base in the next at-bat on an errant pickoff attempt. Thigpen picked up his second RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly that gave Brockton a 3-2 advantage.

Unfortunately, the Rox could not maintain the lead. Quebec scored four runs in the seventh inning; a rally which started as a result of a throwing error by Kelly on a sacrifice bunt attempt.

Brockton threatened in the eighth inning but left two runners on base, a problem which plagued the team all night. The Rox left a total of nine runners on base in the game, including five in scoring position and three at third base.

The Rox and Capitales square off in game two on Thursday as Brockton LHP Rolando Viera starts against Quebec RHP Luis Valdez. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
