MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries (2-3) scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overcome the Sioux City Explorers (3-2) on Saturday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. Josh Patton went 4-for-5 on the night to lead the Canaries to victory.

The Explorers took the lead with a run in the opening inning. Nick McCoola reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a single by Alex Llanos. Chris Grossman followed with a groundout to the third baseman. McCoola scored on the play and the Explorers took an early 1-0 lead. The Canaries answered back in the bottom of the first inning. Grant Richardson singled and advanced to second on a single by Josh Patton. Ben Van Iderstine delivered a two-out base knock to score Richardson and tie the game, 1-1. Sioux City took the lead in the second. Chad Gabriel doubled and scored on a single by Dustin Jones. Gabriel’s run gave the Explorers back the advantage, 2-1. The Explorers expanded the lead in the fifth inning. Jason Tuttle started the inning with a single, and then advanced into scoring position on a bunt single by McCoola. Llanos singled to score Tuttle and put the Explorers ahead by a pair, 3-1.

The Canaries got one run back in the bottom of the seventh. Josh Patton singled and scored on a double by Torbert. Torbert’s first RBI of the night brought the Canaries within a run, 3-2. In the eighth, the Birds soared ahead with five runs. The Canaries loaded the bases on singles by Tim Hutting and Andrew Barbaro and a walk to Kennard Bibbs. With two outs and Alex Bardeguez running at second for Barbaro, Patton singled through the left side. Hutting and Bardeguez scored on the play and the Canaries took a 4-3 lead. Torbert followed by taking the very next pitch over the 16-foot wall in centerfield for a three-run homer. Torbert’s 13th homer of the season gave the Canaries a four-run lead and the 7-3 final. Josh Kite (1-1) pitched the final two innings and struck out four to pick up his first win of the season. Ty Marotz (1-2) suffered the loss for Sioux City.

The Canaries and Explorers will wrap-up the three-game split series on Sunday afternoon at the Birdcage.
