Kansas City T-Bones Pound Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 11-5, Move Onto Championship Round

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com -

FARGO, N.D. – Behind a two home run night from Ken Harvey, the Kansas City T-Bones defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, 11-5, at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, N.D. to earn a spot in the Northern League Championship Series for the first time in team history.

Kansas City got their first three batters on against Billy Weitzman with two singles and a walk before the Northern League’s Player of the Month for August induced a lineout and popout for the first two outs.  Bo Hart then singled to left, driving in Aharon Eggleston and Rob Watson to give the T-Bones a 2-0 lead.

Weitzman then retired five straight for Fargo before Harvey hit his first of two home runs on the night, a solo shot with one out to give Kansas City a 3-0 lead.  Weitzman left in favor of Mike Peschel after walking the next batter, Hart.  He allowed three runs on four hits in just two and two-thirds innings in the loss.

Peschel got a quick out to begin the fourth before allowing the next five batters to reach on four hits and a walk.  Greg Jacobs drove in two runs with a double before he scored on a two-run shot by Harvey, his second of the game.  Kansas City plated four in the inning to extend their lead to 7-0.

Kansas City added three more tallies, two earned, in the sixth against Donnie Smith on two hits.  Jim Fasano drove in the first two with a single to center.  Harvey later came home for the third run on an errant throw by RedHawks shortstop Jeremiah Piepkorn for a 10-run T-Bones advantage.

The RedHawks finally broke through against Kenny Durost in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff home run by Steve Mortimer.  Durost allowed just the one run on four hits over six innings of work to earn the victory.  The right-hander loaded the bases in the first and third innings but Fargo couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities.

Jacobs drove in the T-Bones final run in the seventh with his second double of the contest.  He finished two-for-four with three RBI and two walks.  Rob Watson went three-for-four with two walks and four runs scored.  Harvey finished three-for-six with two home runs and three RBI.  The last four hitters for Kansas City combined to go just one-for-19 while the first five finished 13-for-25.

Brady Martinez threw perfect seventh and eighth innings for the T-Bones.  Andy Shipman allowed four runs in the ninth on RBI singles by Kole Zimmerman, Carlo Cota, Jimmy Hurst and Piepkorn to cap the score at 11-5.  He struck out two and walked two in the inning.

Following their sweep of the regular season’s first-place team, the T-Bones now wait to face the winner of the series between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Gary SouthShore RailCats.  Kansas City will host the first two games of the Northern League Championship Series on Tuesday and Wednesday with both contests starting at 7:05.  Tickets for those games will go on sale tomorrow, Saturday, September 6 and can be purchased by calling 913-328-BALL (2255) or by visiting www.tbonesbaseball.com.
