American Association Recap for 7/3/09

 SIOUX FALLS - Here's the American Association recap for Friday, July 3:

 Sioux Falls 7, Grand Prairie 4

Sioux Falls rallied from a 4-3 deficit with four big runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Grand Prairie 7-4. SS Tim Hutting led all Sioux Falls hitters with two hits and three RBI and his two-run single in the eighth plated the last two Canaries runs. Sioux Falls starter Jino Gonzalez turned in a nice outing as he went 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits. With the Airhogs leading 4-3, Andrew Pluta relieved Gonzalez, got one out, and was the eventual winner.  Kris Regas worked a perfect ninth inning for his 15th save. Grand Prairie 3B Cesar Nicolas led the AirHogs offense as he went 3-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI.  Grand Prairie CF Drew Holder also homered in the loss.

Pensacola 7, Ft. Worth 4

Pensacola scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning off Ft. Worth closer Dustin Cameron to top the Cats by a 7-4 final. A defensive error by Ft. Worth put the go ahead run in scoring position before a sacrifice bunt and RBI single by SS Luis Guance gave Pensacola the lead.  Two more hits in the inning gave the Pelicans some insurance and Hunter Davis came on to close the game, collecting his 10th save. Tyler Wilson pitched two innings in relief of starter Dane DeValk and got the win for Pensacola.  2B Antoin Gray had a big performance for the Pelicans as he finished 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Sioux City 8, St. Paul 4

Sioux City got solid production from the bottom of their batting order and a fine performance from their bullpen to double up St. Paul 8-4.  Hitting seventh and eighth in the order, 1B Derek Schermerhorn and 2B Justin Toole combined for five hits, three RBI, and a run scored to pace the Explorers offense. Relievers David Trahan, Tyler Meigs, and Brett Reid were dominant for the final 3 1/3 innings of the contest. The trio combined to strike out seven batters and did not allow a Saints hitter to reach base. Sioux City starter Steve Spurgeon pitched 5 2/3 innings and was the winner, improving to 5-4 on the season. St. Paul DH Jacob Butler hit a grand slam homerun to account for all the Saints runs.

Wichita 1, Lincoln 1  (Mid 3 / Suspended – Rain)
@ Lincoln, NE.
 
The game between Wichita and Lincoln was suspended due to rain with the score tied 1-1 in the middle of the third inning. The game will be resumed Saturday, July 4th at 4:35pm and will be nine innings. Saturday’s originally scheduled game will be played following the completion of the suspended game and will be seven innings.
