2008 NLL Season Awards

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - DENVER – The National Lacrosse League announced on Monday that Colorado Mammoth forward Dan Carey has won the league’s 2008 Sportsmanship Award.

Carey tallied 22 goals and 27 assists in 11 games this season before suffering a season-ending injury. The 26-year-old left-hander has played three seasons for the Mammoth since graduating from Canisius College , winning the NLL championship in 2006 after being named to the league’s All-Rookie team. He has appeared in the NLL All-Star Game in each of his three seasons.

Carey is admired by both teammates and opponents. In 43 career games, he has accumulated only 11 penalty minutes, none in 2008. Carey even apologized to Steve Dietrich of the Calgary Roughnecks after he delivered a shot which knocked out the veteran goalkeeper in the season opener.

The NLL also announced on Monday that Edmonton Rush captain Chris McElroy has won the first ever Community Service Award.

The league will continue to announce award winners for the 2008 season from now until May 15. The announcements continue on Tuesday with the “Tom Borrelli Award” for the Writer of the Year, as well as the Executive of the Year Award and additional team executive awards.
