Winston-Salem Warthogs Walk Off with 1-0 Extra Innings Win Over the Lynchburg Hillcats
Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 02:18PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – WINSTON-SALEM, NC - In a pitching dominated affair on Wednesday afternoon at Ernie Shore Field, Paulo Orlando plated C.J. Lang with the game’s only run in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Winston-Salem Warthogs a walk-off 1-0 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats (2-3). Lang, who finished 2-for-4 with a double, led off the tenth with a single and advanced to second base on a Billy Killian sacrifice bunt. After Sergio Miranda lined out, Orlando lined the game-winning single down the left field to clinch the Warthogs (1-1) first win of the 2008 campaign.
Warthogs starting pitcher John Ely was stellar in his Carolina League debut as he tossed six innings of shutout baseball, but did not factor in the decision. Ely, a top-rated prospect in the White Sox organization, limited the Hillcats to two hits without allowing a walk and striking out five. Reliever Israel Chirino worked three solid innings, yielding just two hits with four strikeouts. Matt Long (1-0) worked a scoreless tenth for the Warthogs to collect the win.

ADVERTISEMENT Making his first start of the year, Brian Holliday was equally impressive for the Hillcats, as the southpaw held the Warthogs scoreless in six innings of work. He limited Winston-Salem to four hits with five strikeouts. Blair Johnson followed suit with three scoreless innings and four strikeouts out of the Lynchburg bullpen. The Warthogs were finally able to push the winning run across against losing pitcher Charles Benoit (0-1) in the tenth frame.
The Warthogs and Hillcats will conclude their series on Thursday evening at Ernie Shore Field. Winston-Salem will send White Sox top prospect and 2007 first round (25th overall) selection Aaron Poreda (0-0, 0.00) to the mound. Lynchburg will answer with LHP Tony Watson (0-1, 4.91).
