Aerodynamics…

• A Good Start…Aeros starter Frank Herrmann survived an early scare and
Akron never trailed in a 5-1 win over Bowie last night, getting a
seven-game road trip off on the right foot. Herrmann got out of a bases
loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the first when he induced Ben Davis
to roll into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning, and the Aeros then
took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single by LF Nathan Panther in the second and an
RBI double by 2B Brandon Chaves in the fifth. Herrmann worked into the
sixth, but after retiring the first two hitters surrendered consecutive
singles and was lifted in favor of Sung-Wei Tseng. Tseng answered the call
in impressive fashion however, retiring Ryan Finan on a first-pitch pop-up
to keep the lead intact. Akron then added a run in the seventh and two
insurance runs in the ninth for the final margin. It was the first game
this year that the Aeros had won when scoring first.
• Letting the Defense Work…Although Herrmann stands 6’4” and throws his
fastball in the low 90s, he doesn’t really have the profile of a power
pitcher and that was illustrated last night. Hermann faced a total of 23
hitters last night, and did not record a strikeout despite getting two
strikes on 12 of those batters (four of them reached base). On the flip
side, Herrmann didn’t allow a walk and has gone eight innings since
issuing his last base on balls. The native of Rutherford, NJ allowed only
28 walks in 146.0 innings with Kinston last season.
• The Start of Something Good…Akron got major contributions from a pair of
players that had been mired in season-long funks last night, as CF Jose
Constanza and 2B Brandon Chaves drove in two RBI each. Constanza finished
1-3 and also scored a run, while Chaves went 2-5 and collected his first
extra-base hit of the year, a double in the fifth. The pair were both
hitting under .100 coming into last night’s game, with Constanza hitting
.089 and Chaves sitting at .094.
• Still Streaking…Both 3B Wes Hodges and LF Nathan Panther extended their
hitting streaks to nine games last night, matching Michael Aubrey for the
longest mark on the club this year. Hodges went 1-4, while Panther enjoyed
his first multi-hit game of the year with three knocks, a double, two runs
scored and an RBI. Both Hodges and Panther are hitting better than .350
during their streaks, and Hodges has hit in every game except the April
7th contest at Binghamton. Panther, meanwhile, has a hit in every game
he’s played this year. Binghamton’s Mike Carp has hit in 10 straight games
for the Mets, and has the longest active streak in the league.
