Bowie Baysox Edge Akron Aeros 5-4 in 10 Innings - AA, Eastern League
Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 01:49PM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - BOWIE, MD – Lou Montanez hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th as
Bowie defeated Akron 5-4 in 10 innings before 8,183 fans at Prince
George’s Stadium Friday night. The Baysox improved to 6-9 while the
Aeros dropped to 6-8.
Bowie opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, as Jeff Nettles led
off the frame with a solo shot to left. Travis Brown added an RBI single
later in the frame, but Aeros starter Ryan Edell got Blake Davis to bounce
into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Akron rallied to tie things in
the top of the fourth, as Chris Tillman issued consecutive four-pitch
walks to Chris de la Cruz and Wes Hodges to open the inning. Michael
Aubrey then made Tillman pay for his wildness, driving a two-run double
into right-center field to tie the game.

ADVERTISEMENT The Baysox retook the lead on Brown’s RBI single in the fifth, and the
Aeros stranded the tying run in scoring position in each of the next three
innings. In the ninth however, the Akron offense awoke against Baysox
closer Julio Manon. Manon recorded the first two outs easily, and then had
two strikes on Jose Constanza before the Aeros centerfielder singled
sharply to left field to extend the game. Manon then got ahead in the
count 1-2 on Brandon Chaves, only to see Chaves drive a booming triple to
the gap in right-center to score Constanza and make it 4-3. De la Cruz
then capped the outburst, singling home Chaves with a knock to right to
tie the game in memorable fashion.
Akron reliever Shawn Nottingham made some huge pitches to strand a runner
at third in the bottom of the ninth, striking out Blake Davis and
Sebastien Boucher on seven straight sliders to send it to extra innings.
The Aeros were in good position in the top of the 10th with men on the
corners and only one away, but Manon got Nathan Panther to ground into an
inning-ending 4-6-3 double play and set the stage for Montanez’s heroics
in the bottom of the frame.
Manon (1-1) blew the save but got the win, while Nottingham (0-1) was hung
with the loss despite pitching well. Aubrey went 2-5 with a double and two
RBI, while Chaves delivered a pair of triples and a walk for his second
straight multi-hit game. Both Hodges and Panther went 0-4 as their hitting
streaks ended at nine games apiece.
Game three in this four-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday, as the
Aeros send Kevin Dixon (0-1, 4.09 ERA) to the hill against Bowie southpaw
Chris Waters (2-0, 0.66 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on
SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more
