Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 04:16PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem Warthogs offense finally came to life with a six-run third inning en route to a 9-4 win over Frederick on Friday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs (5-6) offense, which failed to score more than five runs in a game this season, overcame an early 4-0 deficit and Warthogs starting pitcher Michael Dubee battled thru early struggles to toss seven solid innings for the win.
Frederick (9-5) pounced on Dubee early with four consecutive singles to start the game. Matt Wieters and Brandon Tripp each collected an RBI and an error by Warthogs right fielder Anderson Gomes allowed another run to score giving the Keys a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Keys added a run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Chris Vineyard.
The Warthogs erupted for six runs in the bottom of the third inning off Key starting pitcher Jake Renshaw. With runners on the corners and no outs, Anderson Gomes hit into a double play which scored C.J. Retherford with the Warthogs first run. Next, Paulo Orlando tripled and C.J. Lang was hit by a pitch. Javier Colina drilled a two-run double to extend his hitting streak to ten games. After Brandon Allen walked, Lee Cruz smashed another two-run double to give the Warthogs a 6-4 lead.

ADVERTISEMENT Winston-Salem added a pair of runs in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Anderson Gomes. Gomes, who entered the at-bat 1-for-25 on the season, drove an offering from Keys reliever Ryan Ouellette to left field to plate Adam Ricks and Retherford to give the Warthogs an 8-4 lead. Ricks added an RBI single in the seventh to finalize the scoring.
After getting smacked around in the first inning, Dubee (1-0) settled down and tossed seven innings while holding the Keys to one run over his final six frames. The seven innings worked was the longest outing this season for a Warthogs starting pitcher. Ryan Rote and Noe Rodriguez each worked a scoreless inning of relief to preserve the lead. Renshaw (2-1) allowed six runs in just three innings to suffer his first loss of the season.
Game three of this four-game series is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 with the first pitch scheduled for 6 PM at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs will send RHP John Ely (0-1, 2.25) to the mound. The Keys will counter with RHP Jake Arrieta (1-0, 3.65).
