top of the ninth inning last night, the Aeros mounted a stirring two-run
rally to tie the game only to see Bowie’s Lou Montanez sock a walk-off
homer in the bottom of the 10th to give the Baysox a 5-4 victory. Things
looked bleak in the ninth as Bowie closer Julio Manon retired the first
two hitters in a 4-2 game, but CF Jose Constanza stayed with a 1-2 pitch
and lined it the opposite way to left for a single to keep the game alive.
SS Brandon Chaves then fell behind in the count 1-2 as well, but turned on
a low fastball and lofted it to the gap in right-center for an RBI triple.
Then just two pitches later 2B Chris de la Cruz laced a game-tying single
to right as the Aeros made it a brand new ballgame.
• Tough Luck…Aeros lefty Shawn Nottingham surrendered the winning home run
last night and suffered the loss, which was unfortunate because he pitched
well. Nottingham entered in the bottom of the eighth and promptly got a
double play to end the inning, and then worked out of trouble in the
bottom of the ninth. Bowie’s Jonathan Tucker led off with an infield
single to short, but inexplicably no one covered second base and Tucker
took advantage by racing into scoring position. Travis Brown then put down
a sacrifice to move Tucker to third with only one out, but Nottingham
responded by striking out Blake Davis on three straight sliders, and then
got Sebastien Boucher on four straight sliders to send the game into extra
innings.
• Missed Opportunities…The chances were certainly there for Akron to get
to the .500 mark for the first time all season last night, but the Aeros
couldn’t take advantage of numerous opportunities throughout the game. RF
Ryan Goleski hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the top of the fourth
inning, and Akron then left runners in scoring position in the sixth,
seventh, and eighth innings. The Aeros had a chance to take the lead in
the 10th with runners on the corners and just one out, but Manon got LF
Nathan Panther to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
• Triple Trouble…SS Brandon Chaves hit a pair of triples last night to tie
a franchise record. Trevor Crowe was the last player to hit two triples in
a game, doing it August 11th last year.
• Go Speed Racer…Josh Rodriguez entered last night’s game as a
pinch-runner and stole a pair of bases, becoming the first Aero this
season to steal multiple bases in a game. Rodriguez stole 21 bases in
Kinston last year.
• Did You Know…The Aeros and the Baysox combined to hit into five double
plays last night. Akron tied a season high by hitting into two
twin-killings, and set a season-high by turning three DPs in the field.
