Frisco RoughRiders Beat Corpus Christi Hooks 5-2 - AA, Texas League

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – CORPUS CHRISTI -- Frisco tagged the Corpus Christi bullpen for single runs in each of the last three innings to beat the Hooks 5-2 before 7,232 Friday at Whataburger Field.

The RoughRiders, who occupy first place in the Texas League South, are 11-3. Corpus Christi is 9-5.

Elvis Andrus, Emerson Frostad and Chris Davis provided RBIs in the seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. Frostad tripled off Ryan McKeller and Davis ripped a two-out homer to right-center off Ryan Thompson.

Warner Madrigal notched his sixth save of the season. Madrigal began the ninth by walking Tommy Manzella and Richie Paz, but retired the final three hitters.

Frisco starter Michael Ballard (2-0) was touched for nine hits and two walks over six innings, but permitted just one run. The Hooks out-hit the RoughRiders 13-10. Corpus Christi was 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13.

John Mayberry gave the RoughRiders a 1-0 lead in the first. Andrus was struck by a pitch and stole second before Mayberry stroked a double to right field.

Frisco added a run an inning later. Taylor Teagarden opened with a walk and was ruled safe at second base when Drew Sutton's throw on a fielder's choice drew Manzella off the bag. After Adam Fox bounced into a double play, Frostad delivered an RBI single to right.

Corpus Christi's two-out rally in the third was thwarted by a sparkling defensive play. Manzella and Paz singled, but Andrus went deep in the hole at short on Rob Cosby's sharp grounder and threw Paz out at second.

The Hooks halved Frisco's advantage in the fifth. A lead-off double by Mitch Einertson, Sutton's single and a double play ball off the bat of Manzella generated the score.

The RoughRiders moved up by two again during the seventh, a frame in which their first four batters reached base. Fox's single and a walk to Frostad chased reliever Chris Blazek. McKeller gave up consecutive singles to Craig Gentry and Andrus for Frisco's third run, then fanned Chris Davis and Max Ramirez to end the inning.

Frisco padded its lead with a run in the eighth. Fox's two-out single to left preceded the triple to deep center by Frostad.

Corpus Christi made it 4-2 in its half of the inning. Lou Santangelo smacked a Brandon Puffer pitch for a lead-off double to right and sprinted home when Eli Iorg doubled the other way.

Hooks starter Chance Douglass (1-1) struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings. He allowed an earned run, three hits and three walks.

Manzella extended his hitting streak to seven games.
