Winston-Salem Warthogs Get Busy in 8th and Beat Frederick Keys 3-2 - Adv A, Carolina League

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A pitcher’s duel turned dramatic in the late innings as Brandon Allen smacked a two-run double down the right field line with two outs in the eighth inning to rally the Warthogs to a 3-2 win over Frederick on Saturday night at Ernie Shore Field.  Winston-Salem was only able to muster three hits for the game, but two of them were run producing doubles that carried the Warthogs to victory in the third game of this four-game series.

Frederick broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning when Todd Davison singled and moved to second on a fielding error by Warthogs right fielder Anderson Gomes.  After a Matt Wieters ground out moved the runner to third, Davison scored on a passed ball to give the Keys a 2-1 advantage, which set the table for the Warthogs rally.

Sergio Miranda led off the bottom of eighth inning by drawing a walk against Frederick starting pitcher Jake Arrieta.  After Paulo Orlando laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Miranda to second base, Arrieta was replaced in favor of Jason Burch.  Burch walked C.J. Lang to put runners on first and second before striking out Javier Colina with the second out of the inning.  Allen followed with the game-winning hit to give Winston-Salem its first lead at 3-2.

Warthogs closer Kanekoa Texiera worked a perfect ninth inning to collect his second save of the season.  Matt Davis (1-1) allowed the unearned run to score in the eighth, but picked up the win in relief.  Burch (1-1) surrendered the winning run and took the loss for Frederick.

Both starting pitchers were stellar, but neither factored in the decision as Arrieta lasted 7 1/3 innings and limited Winston-Salem to one earned run on two hits with eight strikeouts.  Warthogs’ starter John Ely was equally impressive going seven innings and only surrendering one run on eight hits with six strikeouts.

The Keys struck first with a run in the fourth inning.  Paul Winterling singled with two outs and scored on an RBI double by Jason White.  On the play, White was gunned down at third base to end the inning with Frederick in front 1-0.

After being limited to one hit thru the first five innings, the Warthogs finally plated a run in the sixth inning when Paulo Orlando reached on an error and scored on a two-out RBI double by Javier Colina, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
