Ian Gac of the Clinton LumberKings Slams Dayton Dragons into the Ground for a 11-1 Victory - A, Midwest League
Monday, April 21, 2008 at 09:00AM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Dayton, Ohio — Midwest League home run leader Ian Gac (pronounced GACK) drilled a grand slam homer and drove in five runs as the Clinton LumberKings completed a three-game sweep of the Dayton Dragons on Sunday with an 11-1 victory.
The loss dropped the Dragons record to 8-8 on the year. They are one game out of first place in the Eastern Division.
Clinton scored four runs in the first inning against Dayton starting pitcher Andrew Bowman (0-1). Tim Smith’s two-run single got the scoring started and Miguel Alfonzo added a two-run double to make it 4-0.
Jamie Arneson replaced Bowman on the mound with two outs and the bases loaded in the first and worked out of further trouble in that inning, but allowed five runs in the third as Clinton broke the game open. A pair of infield singles, a walk, and a hit batsman combined for the first run, and Gac’s grand slam brought in four more to make it 9-0. The home run was Gac’s seventh of the season.
Clinton added two more runs in the top of the seventh off Dragons reliever Terrell Young. Gac delivered an RBI single and Christian Santana also added a run-scoring hit.
The Dragons only run of the game came on a long solo home run by Denis Phipps in the bottom of the seventh inning. Phipps drilled a shot to straightaway center field, his third home run of the season.
The highlight of the afternoon for the Dragons was the work of left-handed relief pitcher Jeremy Horst. He tossed three innings of hitless, scoreless baseball and lowered his earned run average to 0.63.
Notes: The Dragons added Bowman to the roster prior to Sunday’s game and promoted pitcher Kevin Gunter to Sarasota…The 11 runs by Clinton were the most this season by a Dragons opponent while their 15 hits matched a season high for the opposition.
