Winston-Salem Warthogs (the Comeback Kids) Do it Again to Beat Frederick Keys 3-2 - Adv A, Carolina League
Monday, April 21, 2008 at 01:59PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - WINSTON-SALEM, NC - For the second consecutive game, the Winston-Salem Warthogs were able to rally back from an early deficit to sneak away with a 3-2 win over the Frederick Keys on Sunday afternoon at Ernie Shore Field. Anderson Gomez proved the hero on Sunday afternoon as he blasted a two run home run in the sixth inning to give the Warthogs (7-6) a lead their bullpen would not relinquish.
Engaged in another pitchers duel, the Keys (9-7) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when Miguel Abreu rolled an RBI single to left field with two outs to score Todd Davison from second base. Frederick added a run in a run in the sixth inning when Danny Figueroa led off the inning with a double and scored on an RBI double by Matt Wieters to give the Keys a 2-0 lead.
Winston-Salem was finally able to produce against Frederick starting pitcher Brad Bergesen in the sixth inning. Brandon Allen smacked a solo home run to cut the Warthogs deficit in half. After Billy Killian singled and stole second, Anderson Gomes, who was 2-for-29 on the season, delivered the game-deciding home run off Bergesen to give Winston-Salem a 3-2 lead.
The Warthogs bullpen was able to hold the lead as Israel Chirino worked 1 1/3 of scoreless relief to collect the win. Ryan Rote allowed just one hit over the final two frames to earn his first save of the season. Aaron Poreda started the game for the Warthogs, but did not factor in the decision after tossing 5 1/3 innings. He limited the Keys to two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Bergesen (1-1) allowed three runs in six innings to take the loss for the Keys. Javier Colina picked up an infield single in his final at-bat to extend his hitting streak to 12 games as the Warthogs took the final three games of this four-game set.
Winston-Salem and Frederick will conclude their four-game series at Ernie Shore Field this afternoon with a 2 PM first pitch. After a dramatic comeback win last night, the Warthogs will hand the ball to Chicago White Sox 2007 first round pick (25th overall) LHP Aaron Poreda (0-1, 1.80). The Keys will send RHP Brad Bergesen (1-0, 0.79) to the mound in another much anticipated pitchers duel. Winston-Salem has claimed victory in the last contests with Frederick after dropping the series opener. A win by the Warthogs will make the fans at Ernie Shore Field happy....except for the ones rooting for the Keys.
