Infielder Kurt Mertins of Wilmington Blue Rocks Named Carolina League Player of the Week

The 21-year-old Mertins batted .500 (9-for-18) with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs in five games for Wilmington during the week. In addition, he drew three walks, scored four runs, stole a base and slugged .722, helping the Rocks to three victories.
For the season, the Yorba Linda, CA native 
ADVERTISEMENT has compiled a .347 average in 15 games, splitting duties between second base and third base for the Blue Rocks. Entering Monday, Mertins led Wilmington and ranked fourth in the league in batting. He is also in the midst of a season-best seven-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .423 with four multi-hit games.
Mertins, a 13th-round draft choice of the Kansas City Royals in 2006, is in first season with the Blue Rocks after spending 2007 at Low-A Burlington (IA) of the Midwest League.
