Dayton Dragons Defeat Cedar Rapids Kernels 3-1 - Advanced A, Midwest League
Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 09:23AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Dayton, Ohio—Luis Montano took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Todd Frazier blasted a long home run as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 3-1 on Tuesday night. A crowd of 7,919 saw the game at Fifth Third Field.
Montano (3-0) walked two and struck out five over seven innings, allowing only one base hit, a triple to Clay Fuller, the final batter of the inning who was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch the extra base hit into an inside-the-park home run. Fuller’s triple scored Efren Navarro, who had walked, from first ADVERTISEMENT base with the Kernels’ only run of the night. Montano left after seven innings and 83 pitches.
Enerio Del Rosario worked two perfect innings in relief of Montano for his fourth save.
The Dragons took an early lead when Keltavious Jones led off the first inning with a single to right and Frazier followed with a titanic blast to the left of the scoreboard that landed on the roof of the left field concessions building to make it 2-0.
In the Dayton second, Justin Reed tripled down the right field line with two outs and after a walk to Jones, Zack Cozart lined a singled up the middle to bring in Reed and make it 3-0. The Cedar Rapids run in the seventh closed out the scoring.
The Dragons meet Cedar Rapids again on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Curtis Partch (0-2, 6.91) will start for Dayton against Cedar Rapids’ Michael Anton (1-1, 2.95). Dayton will need a win to complete a series sweep of Cedar Rapids and a split of their six game homestand. They lost the first three games of the stand to Clinton.
Notes: Montano became the first Dragons pitcher this season to work at least six innings in a start…Cincinnati Reds Minor League Pitching Coordinator Mack Jenkins has been in town for the series. Jenkins named Jordan Smith, who spent the 2007 season with the Dragons and is now with Sarasota, as the pitcher in the Reds organization who made the most improvement from March, 2007 to March, 2008.
