Corpus Christi Hooks Defeat Midland RockHounds

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Firework shells were at a premium during the  series finale between Midland and Corpus Christi – and it wasn’t a  Friday night.

Less than 24 hours after suffering their worst loss of the season,  the Hooks banged out 24 hits, five home runs, including a grand slam  off the bat of Chris Johnson, en route to an 19-5 drubbing of the  RockHounds before 6,518 Wednesday night at Whataburger Field.

Corpus Christi, now 12-8 in the first half, established franchise  records for runs, hits and victory margin.

A walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases for Corpus Christi  to open the second. Johnson then lined the first pitch from right- hander Ryan Webb just over the left-field fence and into the Zarsky  Zone. Corpus Christi’s first grand slam of the season gave the club  a 4-1 lead.

A looping single by Jose Lopez continued the inning and Tommy  Manzella extended his league-leading hitting streak to 13 games with  a chopper up the middle, putting runners at first and second base.  Richie Paz followed by placing a single in front of a charging Jon  Zeringue in center field, plating Lopez for a four-run advantage.

Lopez’s two-out, two-run single in the third made it 7-1 Corpus  Christi. Drew Sutton added another run in the following at-bat with  his seventh double of the season.

Webb (1-1), who entered the game as the league’s ERA leader at 0.51,  was tagged for eight runs off 10 hits over 2.2 innings.

The Hooks put up another five-spot in the fourth, highlighted by  Mitch Einertson’s three-run homer into Corpus Christi’s bullpen.  Einertson contributed another round-tripper, a solo shot to left- center in the seventh.

Back-to-back home runs by Ray Sadler and Eli Iorg in the fifth put  the Hooks up by 11.

German Melendez worked two innings of perfect relief to close out  the game.

Johnson, who was a triple shy of the cycle, finished the night 3- for-5 with three runs scored and five RBIs. Sadler scored three  times and drove in three, including his second homer and triple of  the season, respectively. Iorg went 3-for-6 with a homer, double,  three runs scored and two RBIs.
