Winston-Salem Warthogs News & Notes - Adv A, Carolina League

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - WINSTON-SALEM WARTHOGS
ADVANCED CLASS A AFFILIATE OF THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX

GAME NOTES
Winston-Salem Warthogs (9-7) vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (7-12)
Friday, April 25—Frawley Stadium — Wilmington, DE First Pitch 7:05 PM

W-S: RHP John Ely (0-1, 1.89)
vs.
WIL: RHP Blake Wood (0-1, 5.29)
Ely is making his fourth start of the season and first against Wilmington.
The former Miami (OH) Redhawk has only allowed 4
ER in 19 IP this season while limiting opponents to a .239 batting
average. He has been hampered by lack of run supports as the
Warthogs have only scored 8 runs in his three starts. His last
time on the mound, the 2007 third round pick held Frederick to
just 1 ER on 8 hits with 6 K. He has gone at least 6 IP in all three
starts this year.
Wood takes the mound for his fifth start of the season. After limiting
Myrtle Beach to just one hit in 5.1 shutout innings in his
first start, Wood has struggled to last thru the fifth inning in his
last 3 outings. His last time out, he took the loss against Potomac
after allowing 4 ER on 8 hits in 4 IP. Wood was selected in the
3rd round of the 2006 draft out of Georgia Tech.
RIGHT BACK AT YA ….. Michael Dubee sparkled on the mound as the
Warthogs held on for a 7-5 win over Potomac in the series finale on
Wednesday afternoon at Ernie Shore Field. Dubee (2-0) silenced the Potomac
offense, as he limited the Nationals to just two hits in six shutout innings
to earn the win. Combined with the Salem loss to Kinston earlier in
the day, the Warthogs regained first place in the Southern Division of the
Carolina League.
The Warthogs jumped in front early as Javier Colina, who extended his hitting
streak to a Carolina League best 14 games, doubled with one out in the
first inning. After Salvador Sanchez struck out, Brandon Allen crushed a
two-run home run off Potomac starting pitcher Ross Detwiler to give the
Warthogs a 2-0 lead. It was Allen’s third home run in the last four games.
Winston-Salem extended its lead to 3-0 courtesy of an unearned run in the
fourth inning. Lee Cruz reached on an error when his grounder rolled under
the glove of third basemen Leonard Davis. Later in the inning, Anderson
Gomez doubled with two outs to advance Cruz to third base. Next, C.J.
Lang grounded hard to third base, but Davis made a fantastic diving stab
and throw to first from his backside. The ball beat Lang to the bag at first
but Chris Marrero could not glove it cleanly allowing Cruz to score.
Three more runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Sanchez and backto-
back RBI hits by Cruz and Retherford provided Winston-Salem with
much needed insurance runs and a 6-0 lead..
Potomac struck for a pair of runs in the seventh inning against the Warthogs
bullpen as Israel Chirino surrendered two runs and loaded the bases before
Matt Davis took over and ended the threat. The Nationals continued the
rally in the eighth inning when Leonard Davis lifted a two-run home run
over the left field wall to cut the Warthogs lead to 6-4.
C.J. Retherford gave the Warthogs some breathing room in the eighth inning
with a solo home run off Jack Spradlin. It was Retherford’s first home
run of the season. The Nationals added a run in the ninth to finalize the
scoring as Ryan Rote recorded the final three outs to collect his second save
of the year.

STREAK ME…..Javier Colina smacked a pair of doubles on Wednesday
to extend his hitting streak to a Carolina League best 14 games. He has hit
safely in every game he has played this season.
MISTAKE FREE….. After committing an error in 10 straight games, the
Warthogs went mistake-free for the second straight game. It is the first
time this season the Warthogs have gone consecutive games w/o an error.
