Luke Carlin drew four walks to go with a single and scored two runs to help the Beavers (8-13) avoid being swept in the four-game series and halt a seven-game skid to Las Vegas on the 51s’ home field. Next up, the Beavers open a four-game series with Oklahoma at PGE Park Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
After Gonzalez tied the game with a sac fly in the third inning, Chip Ambres doubled and Carlin walked to lead off the fourth. Robles’ sac fly drove in Ambres and Craig Stansberry’s two-out single to left plated Carlin for a 4-2 Portland lead.
The Beavers got an RBI double from Robles in the eighth and back-to-back doubles from Chase Headley and Gonzalez in the ninth to pad their lead.
Geer (2-2) picked up the victory, limiting the 51s to two runs (1 earned) and four hits over six innings in his fifth start of the year. He did not allow a walk and struck out two.
Jared Wells worked the scoreless bottom of the ninth to get his second save for the Beavers, who had allowed 38 runs and 50 hits to the 51s over the first three games of the series.
The 51s (12-11) cut Portland’s lead to a run in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Adam Bass. John-Ford Griffin hit a two-out RBI triple and scored on a double by Danny Ardoin to get Las Vegas to within 5-4.
Jon Meloan (2-1) took the loss, issuing five walks and giving up four runs and four hits while striking out five in four innings.
Jason Repko hit a leadoff homer off Geer in the first, and the 51s went up 2-1 with an unearned run in the second after Carlin, who is batting .400 in eight games this season, briefly tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the second.
