John Lackey Leads Rancho Cucamonga Quakes Over Lancaster JetHawks 5-3
Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 12:13PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – (LANCASTER, CA) – There is always a buzz in the ballpark when a Major League player is making a rehabilitation appearance. Especially on those rare times when a true star player takes the field in Lancaster. John Lackey of the Angels held the JetHawks to one run in his three innings of work and the Quakes bullpen took it from there as they defeated Lancaster 5-3 Tuesday night.
Fans, as well as extra media, swarmed Clear Channel Stadium early. They lined the stands near the visiting bullpen to watch each of Lackey’s warm up pitches. He did not disappoint the many Angels fans, pitching well for three innings. The JetHawks did score a run against the Angels ace. Jon Still walked to open the second inning. Josh Reddick singled him over and Still later scored on a sacrifice fly by Zak Farkes.
The Quakes were denied on opportunity to score with the bases loaded in the first inning on a great double play started by Chih-Hsien Chiang, but they still managed four runs over the next two innings and never trailed.
ADVERTISEMENT Lancaster tightened the game with two runs in the seventh inning after consecutive singles by Farkes, Aaron Reza, and Matt Sheely, but could not mount a rally in the eighth or ninth. Reza and Reddick each had two hits for Lancaster while Josh Papelbon excelled out of the bullpen with two perfect innings of relief.
The JetHawks continue a seven-game homestand Wednesday night at Clear Channel Stadium. Travis Beazley (1-2) will start for Lancaster against the Quakes’ David Herndon (0-3). The game starts at 7:00. The JetHawks Clubhouse Show will hit the airwaves from 5-6 PM with special guests JetHawks manager Chad Epperson, former JetHawks star and current Oakland A’s pitcher Greg Smith, and Lake Elsinore Storm manager Carlos Lezcano. It is a “Weight Loss Wednesday” at Clear Channel Stadium. Fans can burn off the calories by power walking around the warning track on the field from 6-6:45 PM and special health-conscious menu items will be available.
