Augusta GreenJackets Beat Charleston RiverDogs 2-1 - A, South Atlantic League

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Charleston - Charleston left 14 runners on base, including the tying and winning runners in scoring position in the ninth, as the Augusta GreenJackets snapped a five-game losing skid with a 2-1 victory over the RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action Wednesday night in front of 5,364 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, Augusta improves to 12-15 on the season while Charleston slips to 20-6.  Even with the loss, the RiverDogs recorded their best one-month record since the opening of Riley Park in 1997 with 20 wins in April,.
Three Augusta pitchers combined to strike out 13 Charleston hitters, many of those coming with runners on base.  No strikeouts were more critical than two consecutive punchouts by reliever Daniel Otero in the ninth.  With the RiverDogs trailing by one run, Justin Snyder led off with a single and moved to third on Jesus Montero’s double down the left field line, leaving two runners in scoring position with nobody out.

ADVERTISEMENT However, Otero fanned Brandon Laird on three pitches for the first out, then got Dave Williams swinging for the second.  Otero then induced a ground out from Brian Baisley to second base to end the game.
Starter Madison Bumgarner, the 10th overall pick in the first round of last June’s amateur draft, pitched four shutout innings while allowing three hits and striking out five RiverDogs.
Joe Patterson (3-1) followed Bumgarner and held Charleston to one run on one hit in 2.1 innings of work.  Otero worked the final 2.2 frames and fanned four in recording his fourth save of the season.
Before fans were comfortable in their seats, the GreenJackets scored in the first to take a quick 1-0 lead.  Ramon Corona drew a walk off of Charleston starter Dellin Betances (3-1), stole second and scored on Thomas Neal’s two-out RBI single up the middle.
Augusta added their second run in the fifth frame when James Simmons doubled to right center with two outs.  Simmons then stole third and scored on Shane Jordan’s triple to center.
Charleston finally scored in the seventh when Snyder drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on Laird’s groundout.  He scored when Williams grounded an RBI single to left, making the score 2-1.
Augusta managed six hits on the night with Jordan accounting for a pair. Charleston had eight knocks, with Montero and Snyder each collecting two.
Montero has now hit safely in 24 of the RiverDogs’ 26 games this season.
Betances pitched five full innings and allowed both runs on three hits while striking out six and walking three.  Wilkins de la Rosa fanned three in his 2.1 innings of work.
