Clinton LumberKings Finish Sweep of Great Lakes Loons in 6-4 Win
Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 05:19PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Clinton, IA – Right-hander Kennil Gomez started the month of April as a reliever out of a Clinton bullpen filled with strong arms. By the end of the month, the 20-year-old hurler finds himself tied for the league lead in wins with four as his LumberKings held on for a sweep of the Great Lakes Loons, 6-4.
Gomez (W, 4-0) matched his season-high for the fourth-straight start, working 6.0 innings. He gave up only two runs, one earned on four hits, walking none while striking out seven. His scoreless-innings streak did finally come to an end at 25 – Loons’ first-baseman Jaime Ortiz belted a solo home run into the Lumber Lounge in the sixth.
The LumberKings once again had the luxury of an early lead, thanks to a four-run first inning against Loons’ starter Geison Aguasviva. After singles by Renny Osuna and Ian Gac, RBI machine Tim Smith came through with his 19th, driving home Osuna with a grounder up the middle. Mitch Moreland added a liner to center, plating both Gac and Smith, and Jonathan Greene continued his breakout homestand with a double to right-center, scoring Moreland for a 4-0 lead.
ADVERTISEMENT Osuna added another RBI single to center in the second, and the Kings manufactured a run on Greene’s run-scoring ground-out in the third to take a 6-0 lead.
Right-handers Hector Nelo and Daniel Sattler kept Great Lakes off the scoreboard for two more innings, but the Loons made things difficult for righty Adalberto Flores in the ninth.
Ortiz and Preston Mattingly each singled, and a pair of wild pitches put the Loons on the board. Alex Garabedian lined a soft single into left, scoring Mattingly to cut the Kings’ lead to two. Flores was then able to get Erik Kanaby to ground into a 6-4 force at second, ending the game.
Aguasviva (L, 1-2) served up six runs on nine hits over only 4.0 innings for Great Lakes. Left-hander Thomas Melgarejo worked 4.0 scoreless innings.
Clinton’s 2-5 hitters – Osuna, Gac, Smith, Moreland and Greene – all had two hits each as the LumberKings recorded 12 total hits. Moreland’s 2-for-4 effort extended his hitting streak to six games. Both Moreland and Greene each drove in two runs.
