Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 03:00PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Jonathon Niese allowed two hits and struck out six over six innings, but the Binghamton Mets fell to the Connecticut Defenders 1-0 at Dodd Stadium Saturday. The loss ends Binghamton’s win streak at three games.
Connecticut (18-16) leadoff man Ben Copeland tripled to begin the bottom of the first before scoring on Olmo Rosario’s groundout. Niese (2-4) allowed a leadoff single to Rosario in the fourth and walked Travis Ishikawa to begin the fifth, but had both baserunners erased as part of double plays. Robert Paulk followed Niese with two perfect innings of relief.
The B-Mets (14-21) had baserunners in five of Joey Martinez’s six innings, but Martinez (2-3) was able to keep Binghamton off the scoreboard. Osiris Matos tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save in four chances.
Sunday, the Binghamton Mets conclude their abbreviated two-game series against the Connecticut Defenders. Jose Sanchez (2-2, 4.93) will start for Binghamton against Adam Cowart (2-1, 2.23) of Connecticut. The first pitch is slated for 1:05 at Dodd Stadium with the radio broadcast beginning at 12:50 at Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
Notes: Binghamton has been shut out four times…the B-Mets had won their previous six 1-0 games, with their last 1-0 loss coming 4/29/06 @ ERI…Binghamton had a runner in scoring position with less than two out in four different innings…the two hits allowed ties a season best (4/3 vs. TRE)…B-Mets pitchers have allowed 7 ER in their last four games, spanning 37 innings (1.70).
