MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – Dayton, Ohio—Logan Parker hit a grand slam home run to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 7-6 win over the Great Lakes Loons in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field. In the second game, Great Lakes came from behind to score four times in the seventh (final) inning to defeat the Dragons 5-2 as the clubs split the twinbill.
In game one, the Dragons built a 7-1 lead over the first three innings before holding on for the win. They scored five runs in the first inning, keyed by Parker’s grand slam homer and a run-scoring single by Denis Phipps. Zack Cozart’s sacrifice fly in the second made it 6-1, and Keltavious Jones delivered an RBI single in the third to make it 7-1.
Great Lakes rallied with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to make it 7-4. Brian Mathews led off the Great Lakes sixth inning with a home run to make it 7-5, and after an infield single by Pedro Baez, Dayton reliever Jeremy Horst replaced starter Luis Montano. Horst walked the first man he faced to put the tying run on but retired the next three to work out of further trouble.
In the seventh (final scheduled inning), Horst retired the first two hitters before issuing back-to-back walks to again put the tying run on base. Joseph Krebs replaced Horst and allowed Baez to drill a double to the left field corner that brought in a run. But on the same play, Baez rounded second, apparently not realizing there was a runner at third, and was caught in a rundown. The runner at third, Mathews, started for the plate, and was tagged out to end the game.
Montano (5-1) earned the win, going five innings and allowing eight hits and five runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Krebs was awarded his fourth save.
In the second game, Great Lakes scored once in the top of the first inning before the Dragons took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Brandon Menchaca doubled to start the inning and scored on Phipps’ double to tie the game. Jake Long singled in Phipps to make it 2-1.
It was still a 2-1 game going to the seventh and final inning. Dragons starting pitcher Scott Carroll retired the lead-off batter before issuing a one out walk. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out. But Great Lakes’ Alex Garabedian reached on an infield single and Carroll was replaced by Krebs, who had allowed only one earned run all season. But Krebs issued back-to-back walks, the second of which forced in the tying run. Preston Mattingly then lined a two-run single to right to give Great Lakes the lead, and Alfredo Silverio added a run-scoring single to close out the scoring.
The series between the Dragons and the Loons will conclude on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Curtis Partch (1-4, 5.64) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes’ Steven Johnson (3-1, 2.12).
Notes: Denis Phipps hit safely in both games to extend his hitting streak to 12 straight.
