Great Lakes Loons and Dayton Dragons Split Weekend Doubleheader One Game Each
Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 05:14PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – DAYTON, OH – The Great Lakes Loons won a game they could have lost, and lost a game they could have won.
After problems running the bases gave the Loons a 7-6 loss, Great Lakes rebounded with a dramatic come-from-behind win over the Dayton Dragons, 5-2, in front of 9,183 fans in a doubleheader at Fifth-Third Field.
In game one, the Loons found themselves trailing 7-1 by the third inning thanks in part to a first-inning grand slam by Logan Parker. The home run was his second of the season and second in as many games.
The Loons battled back to within a run in the seventh and final inning, but third baseman Pedro Baez following a double mistakenly ran to third base with Brian Mathews, representing the tying run, already standing on third, forcing Mathews into an unwanted rundown and ending the ballgame.
ADVERTISEMENT It was Baez’ second baserunning blunder of the ballgame after failing to score on a potential sacrifice fly off the bat of Parker Dalton in the sixth. Scott Van Slyke also ran the Loons into trouble in the third when he attempted to tag up and advance to second on a fly ball off the bat of Kenley Jansen that would have brought home Mathews from third. Van Slyke was thrown out at second to end the inning before Mathews crossed the plate.
Preston Mattingly, Parker Dalton and Brian Mathews all homered for the Loons in the ballgame.
In game two, Dayton starter Scott Carroll pitched admirably coming within one out of a complete game victory before the Loons battled back in the game’s final inning.
With the bases loaded in the seventh and the Loons trailing by one, center fielder Jovanny Rosario drew a walk to force in the game-tying run knotting things up at two. Mattingly followed with a two-run single, his third hit of game, to give the Loons a 4-2 lead. Alfredo Silverio grounded a single up the middle to score Rosario and give the Loons an insurance run, making it 5-2 in favor of Great Lakes.
Victor Garate (1-0) pitched three innings of scoreless relief in picking up his first win of the season. Bobby Blevins retired the Dragons in the ninth and picked up his third save of the season.
Carroll picked up the tough-luck loss dropping his record to 1-2.
The Loons improve to 16-18 while the Dayton falls to 19-14.
The Loons and Dragons conclude their four game series Sunday afternoon. Game time is 2:00pm from Fifth Third Field. Steven Johnson is scheduled to start for Great Lakes. Tune in as Brad Golder and Dan Hasty call all the action from Dayton on the radio flagship home for Great Lakes Loons baseball, ESPN 100.9-FM.
