Hagerstown Suns and West Virginia Power Split Doubleheader 9-0 and 5-4
Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 05:59PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – CHARLESTON, WV – The Hagerstown Suns outscored the West Virginia Power 13-5 in a doubleheader at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, WV on Saturday, May 10th, but the teams split the two games. Hagerstown won the first game 9-0, but dropped game two by a score of 5-4.
The first game picked up in the third inning, after being suspended due to rain on Friday with Hagerstown leading 3-0, and the Suns picked up right where they left off, as Aaron Seuss hit a home run to lead off the top of the third and extend the lead to 4-0.
Hagerstown racked up five more runs in the top of the fifth inning on three hits, three walks and a hit-by-pitch. After Seuss walked to lead off the fifth, Stephen King tripled to right field to drive him home. Jake Smolinski and Travis Reagan then walked to load the bases before Boomer Whiting was hit by a pitch, forcing in King. Dan Lyons and Bill Rhinehart followed up with back-to-back RBI base hits, and the Suns had a 9-0 lead.
Brad Meyers started the game on Friday and pitched two scoreless innings, but it was Eric Arnesen who was on the mound when the game resumed on Saturday. Arnesen pitched four scoreless innings, before Justin Phillabaum closed the door on the Power in the ninth. Arnesen earned the win for Hagerstown, moving his record to 2-0.
West Virginia starter Dan Merklinger took the loss for the Power, falling to 0-2 on the season.
Game two started off well for the Suns, as Lyons singled and later scored in the top half of the first inning to give the visitors the lead, but West Virginia scored two of their own in the home half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
In the second inning, Whiting and Rooney both singled before being driven home by Lyons and Rhinehart to reclaim the lead for the Suns, but it proved to not be enough, even after Whiting’s solo home run in the top of the fourth inning made it a 4-2 ball game. The homer was Whiting’s first of the season.
The Power got two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off Suns’ starter Cole Kimball to tie the game, and Steffan Wilson hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth of reliever Kyle Gunderson to give the home side a 5-4 lead.
The solo shot by Wilson proved to be the difference, as Gunderson (0-1) took the loss for the Suns.
West Virginia reliever Mike Ramlow (2-1) got the win for the Power, as he pitched three innings of scoreless relief.
The Suns and Power will play the fourth and final game of the series on Sunday, May 11th at 2:05 P.M. at Appalachian Power Park.
