The Dragons built a 7-1 lead over the first three innings before holding on for the win. They scored five runs in the first inning, keyed by Parker’s grand slam homer and a run-scoring single by Denis Phipps. Zack Cozart’s sacrifice fly in the second made it 6-1, and Keltavious Jones delivered an RBI single in the third to make it 7-1.
Great Lakes rallied with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to make it 7-4. Brian Mathews led off the Great Lakes sixth inning with a home run to make it 7-5, and after an infield single by Pedro Baez, Dayton reliever Jeremy Horst replaced starter Luis Montano. Horst walked the first man he faced to put the tying run on but retired the next three to work out of further trouble.
In the seventh (final scheduled inning), Horst retired the first two hitters before issuing back-to-back walks to again put the tying run on base. Joseph Krebs replaced Horst and allowed Baez to drill a double to the left field corner that brought in a run. But on the same play, Baez rounded second, apparently not realizing there was a runner at third, and was caught in a rundown. The runner at third, Mathews, started for the plate, and was tagged out to end the game.
Montano (5-1) earned the win, going five innings and allowing eight hits and five runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Krebs was awarded his fourth save.
Phipps extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games.
The Dragons lead game two 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, getting RBI hits in the first inning from Phipps and Jake Long.
The series between the Dragons and the Loons will conclude on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
