Lancaster JetHawks Shut Out by Inland Empire 66ers 5-0 - Advanced A, California League
Monday, May 12, 2008 at 08:34AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – LANCASTER, CA – It is hard to believe that after one of the toughest series of the season, the Lancaster JetHawks will find themselves where they were when they started. But while they were shut out 5-0 by Inland Empire Sunday afternoon and were swept in the three-game series, the same fate befell the Lake Elsinore Storm in Modesto. That keeps the JetHawks in second place, just one game out of the lead. In fact after a strange weekend of California League baseball, all five Southern Division teams have records of below .500 and are within three games of first place.
The pitchers all fared well early Sunday. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jason Schmidt hurled a scoreless inning to begin his minor league rehabilitation assignment. Travis Beazley started with four shutout innings and allowed just one hit in that time. The 66ers took advantage of a walk in the fifth inning, following it with the first of Matt Berezay’s two home runs to take the lead.
Lancaster’s offense put runners on base in seven of the nine innings but only got one runner as far as third base. They went 0-7 with runners in scoring position Sunday and were just two for 23 in the series. No JetHawks player had more than one hit, although Jason Place reached safely three times with a single and a pair of walks.
