Nashville Sounds Beat Las Vegas 51s 5-1 - AAA, Pacific Coast League

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com – LAS VEGAS – The Nashville Sounds wrapped up their road trip with a 5-1 victory over the Las Vegas 51s on Tuesday evening at Cashman Field in the finale of a four-game series.

With the win, Nashville (15-23) finished its West Coast trip with a 5-3 record.

Centerfielder Laynce Nix put the Sounds up 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning when he belted a leadoff solo homer to right off Las Vegas starter Eric Stults. The blast, his fourth of the year, extended Nix’s season-best hitting streak to eight games.

The 51s tied it in the bottom of the fifth when John-Ford Griffin led off by belting an 0-1 Richie Gardner offering over the wall in right for his second home run in as many nights, knotting the contest at 1-1.

Nashville jumped back in front with a three-run seventh. Brad Nelson led off with a walk and stole second. Russell Branyan (2-for-3) followed with a single that chased Stults, then stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position for Eric Munson, who greeted 51s reliever Greg Miller with a two-run single to right that gave the Sounds a 3-1 lead and snapped an 0-for-14 skid for the veteran.

The Sounds made it a 4-1 advantage later in the frame when Abraham Nunez and Brendan Katin executed a double steal, with Katin swiping home on the play.

Shortstop Adam Heether added the final Nashville tally in the top of the ninth when he crushed a 1-1 Matt Riley offering to deep left-center for his third home run of the year.

Gardner (3-1) earned a win in his third straight outing for Nashville by tossing his first quality start of the season. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits over a season-high six innings of action.

Stults (2-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits while fanning eight batters in his six-plus frames for Las Vegas.

After joining the entire Pacific Coast League for an off day on Wednesday, the Sounds return to Greer Stadium on Thursday to begin an eight-game homestand against New Orleans (AAA-Mets) and Memphis (AAA-Cardinals).

Right-hander Mark DiFelice (3-0, 3.91) will make the start for Nashville in Thursday’s 7 p.m. series opener. The Zephyrs will counter with right-hander Brian Stokes (4-3, 5.68).
