Oklahoma RedHawks Surge Past the Fresno Grizzlies to Earn Series Split
Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 04:54PM MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – HIGHLIGHTS: The Oklahoma RedHawks beat the Fresno Grizzlies 9-6 Tuesday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark to split the four-game series. Joaquin Arias paced the RedHawks with three hits, three runs batted in, and two runs scored.
Oklahoma took scored first in a game for the first time during this eight-game homestand when an Arias doubled plated Nate Gold and Ryan Roberts and the RedHawks took a 2-0 lead after two innings. Fresno would respond quickly, scoring three runs in the third and one in the fourth to take the lead, but Arias would help level the score at four apiece in his second at bat of the game. Roberts walked with two outs in the home half of the fourth, Arias followed with a triple, and scored on an error on the relay throw to third that went into the Oklahoma dugout. The Grizzlies regained the lead in the sixth on a solo home run by Nate Schierholtz. The RedHawks, however, rallied for three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth and built a 9-5 lead. Jason Ellison, Jason Botts, and Drew Meyer knocked clutch base hits during the seventh and eighth innings to bring in the five Oklahoma runs. Fresno tallied one in the ninth to cap the scoring, but it was not enough in the end.
Kea Kometani (3-2) picked up the win in relief of starter Dustin Nippert, making his third rehab start while on the Texas Rangers disabled list. Reliever Randy Messinger took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits. Arias had his 13th multi-hit game of the season, including his third three-hit game, while Botts and Meyer each drove in a pair. Oklahoma won three times during its eight-game homestand, have Wednesday off, and travel to Memphis to open a four-game set starting Thursday evening at 7:05 pm. Former Major Leaguers Elizardo Ramirez and Anthony Reyes are slated to get the starts in the series opener.
